Mar 20, 2013 · Raw dynamic range. At ISO 800, the X100S falls a little below the Sony RX100, to the same level as the Sigma DP1, before surging ahead to the lead again at ISO 1600. At ISO 3200 the X100S falls below the Fuji X100 but stays just above the Sony, finishing level with the Sony at the top of its ISO range, ISO 6400.
Sep 15, 2014 · I remember with my old X100, it seemed to do silly things in auto dynamic range. Even outside in bright light, in some situations, it would decide to shoot on 800 ISO rather than its base ISO.

Technically, the practical limit on the X100/X100S is around 1/1000 at f/2, but that’s only when you need to illuminate the whole frame evenly. With a leaf shutter, anything past 1/1000 at f/2 will result in darker corners, because the shutter will not be able to close fast enough to illuminate the corners.

The graph at right (click for a larger version) was generated using Imatest’s dynamic range analysis for a Fuji X100S in-camera JPEG file with a nominally-exposed density step target (Stouffer 4110).
Dynamic Range Expansion. The X100S offers the same dynamic range expansion feature as the X-Pro 1 and X-E1, which uses a different tone curve to include more dynamic range in the final image. To capture an extra stop of highlight information, the camera has to the reduce the exposure, which requires increasing the ISO to compensate.
May 11, 2011 · As a jpeg shooter, I’m struggling to understand the behavior of the Dynamic Range (contrast) settings. It strikes me as odd that at ISO 200 I can only select DR=100%. At ISO 400 I can select DR=100% or 200%.

Jun 13, 2011 · A lower dynamic range image, however, is not necessarily bad, and having a higher dynamic range is not always desirable. If, for example, I want an image to have a punchy, hi-contrast look, I’ll avoid the 400% setting on the X100 because the higher dynamic range, while giving me more detail in shadows and highlights, means less contrast in the image.
This is the dynamic range of the camera. Within this range, the X-Pro1 or X-E1 can depict levels of brightness between pure black and pure white. “Hardware” solutions. Unfortunately the world doesn’t abide by these limits, and many subjects exhibit a larger dynamic …
